Old Meets New

Tucked within a home originally created by renowned Australian architect Wayne Gillespie in 1981, this kitchen transformation showcases how contemporary living can coexist beautifully with architectural heritage.

When the homeowner purchased the abode in 2022, the kitchen was a galley layout that felt cramped, dark and impractical. Laminate benchtops, a stainless gas cooktop, off-white tiled splashback and clunky exhaust fan dated the space. A shiny orange cork floor, though outdated in appearance, did inspire one key design decision: reintroducing cork in a modern form for its durability, lightness and low maintenance benefits.

The homeowners approached the experienced team at Select Kitchens to transform this space. They requested a contemporary Scandinavian-inspired kitchen that maximised light, functionality and clean surfaces, while retaining the original footprint and plumbing.

The new layout embraces these constraints cleverly. The island is accessible from both ends, and doubles as a casual dining space as well as a generous preparation zone. Joinery in pale natural timber melamine reflects light while adding warmth and texture. Push-to-open cabinetry and soft-close drawers maintain clean lines.

This is complemented by white stone benchtops with fine aggregate that contrast beautifully with matt black appliances. A large graphite white sink and mixer anchor the island, while integrated refrigeration and dishwashing keep the aesthetic seamless.

A practical pantry with recessed doors conceals appliances behind a stone benchtop with built-in power points. Soft-pastel-pink tiles add a playful nod to the home’s era, echoed by a Scandinavian-style pendant in the same hue.

This kitchen transformation honours the architect’s original vision while delivering a light-filled, highly functional kitchen designed for modern living and entertaining — just as the homeowners had envisioned.
