Phil started his career in design through art-based development, studying a Diploma in Arts at RMIT, majoring in screen print design and learning the art of making clothes. He was then drawn to garden design through working in garden construction and maintenance and being immersed in a world of plants of all shapes and sizes. During this time, Phil was studying a Diploma in Landscape Design and Sustainability at Swinburne University and started to form an edgy garden design sense.

Since launching Phillip Withers Landscape Design in 2012, Phil has grown to become one of the leaders in the new breed of Australian garden designers. With the benefit of youthful creative dare, exuberance and contemporary sensibility, Phil has gone on to design multiple award winning show gardens in both Melbourne and Sydney, including most recently taking out a Gold Medal and the Best In Show award at the 2017 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.

Phil and his team aim to create beautiful spaces, but also push to program practical and functioning areas that celebrate that use of food. Versatile and playful in his design, Phil has a signature of painting contemporary colour and form into his works with both architectural elements and a pure focus on fantastical plant selection.

Phil enjoys wandering around the globe gathering inspiration and knowledge from the furthest of borders, hearing from people and learning from place.

“I’m often inspired by nature travel, and by the way things work.

“I think it’s easy to create something that’s simply beautiful – the challenge is creating something that’s timeless through its use. That means considering longevity, function and use. Sometimes the best things are the most natural.”
