LANDSCAPE OF THE YEAR AWARDS ENTRANT QLD

Contemporary and traditional design features forge an easy alliance

Carefully fashioned to perfectly complement a Queenslander home, this garden’s design, the result of a close collaboration between Brooke Goodwin, Director of Brooke’s Blooms and Design Manager, landscape architect James Mudge, blends modern and traditional elements to create something truly captivating.

“The design objective was to preserve the timeless charm of the classic Queenslander architecture while simultaneously infusing the outdoor spaces with a modern look and rejuvenated feel,” says Brooke. “The design also needed to cater for every aspect of life, offering diverse spaces for various activities. Whether it’s enjoying morning coffee out on the deck, spending weekends lounging poolside, indulging in private moments while tending the garden, or entertaining friends and family, this versatile design ensures every space can be enjoyed to its fullest potential.”

To improve flow, one of the first things Brooke’s team needed to tackle was the obvious disconnect between the outdoor living area at the rear of the home and the garden. “To address this, we installed large stadium-style steps spanning the length of the deck. This enhanced functionality and created a seamless connection between the deck and the backyard,” says Brooke.

To connect the deck and swimming pool located at the bottom of the garden, the team installed modern polished concrete steppers interplanted with Dichondra repens (kidney weed) to soften the paving’s hard lines. This path adds a contemporary yet elegant touch, addresses the owners’ desire for greater connectivity between spaces, and promotes flow.

“We transformed the pool area, taking it from cramped to open and spacious with the addition of a curved Millboard deck extension. This not only provided ample room for movement but allowed for the incorporation of feature pots and furniture, creating a luxurious feel,” says Brooke. “We also upgraded this area with a custom pool fence of powdercoated steel that transitions to glass around the pool entry.”

To one side of the stairs leading up to the pool, a Corten steel edge curves around a lush lawn bordered by vibrant gardens. Here, an Olea eruopaea (olive tree) stands as a main focal point and is complemented by Magnolia grandiflora ‘Teddy Bear’ (southern magnolia), Michelia x alba (white champaca), Buxus sempervirens (box) clipped into balls, and Rhaphiolepis indica ‘Snow Maiden’ (Indian hawthorn), all chosen for their elegance and timeless appeal.

“We also created a country-style herb and veggie garden at the rear of the property,” adds Brooke. “This reflects a commitment to sustainable living while also functioning as a personal retreat for the owners.”
