An extensive renovation has transformed a retro kitchen into a modern masterpiece

Originally a 1970s period piece, this kitchen has undergone an extensive makeover to accommodate the changing desires of the owners. With narrow and low benchtops, inadequate storage, dark-stained cabinetry and a pantry that was lacking in its very purpose (storage space), it was evident that the old kitchen needed to be brought up to date.

Designer Rex Hirst took on the challenging task of creating the perfect kitchen for the owners. A major concern was, of course, the need for storage and bench space and also to make use of corners that could not be used previously.

The redesign involved the creation of a large, walk-in pantry, which meant renovating the adjacent laundry, too. The previous pantry needed to be removed and a wall rebuilt to make the pantry wider to fit the fridge inside.

The owners had purchased a particular Ilve oven directly from Italy, which had to be incorporated into the design. The colour of the kitchen then had to match the colouring of the oven. Let’s Talk Kitchens rose to the occasion using a two-pack satin finish to match the oven with seamless results. Corian® benchtops were used to create a smooth look without any joins, while wrapping around the room.

Although traditional in style, the kitchen has integrated modernity into its design with a plasma television added into the island bench. Mounted on a Häfele swivel and slide-out unit, the television can be viewed from all angles outside the kitchen.

With ample storage and an elegant design, the kitchen flows seamlessly into the other living areas of the home, signifying a successful integration into the house and a very pleased client.
