An innovative design conveying a wonderful sense of understated elegance.

Complete with an overflow into a balance tank, this multi-level pool with a raised spa is a modern masterpiece. And the best vantage point for enjoying the elegant styling of the pool, not to mention the neat lawn and the two inviting outdoor entertaining areas, is the elevated spa.

Despite the elegant simplicity of the design, the project was not without its challenges. The spa is raised 300mm above the pool with the water from the pool flowing into a balance tank at the other end. As a result, the plumbing had to be designed carefully so all three — spa, pool and balance tank — would equalise.

To enable the pool to hug the side of the house, some serious structural work had to happen. The footings of the home had to be underpinned to create a suspended slab. The pool was then engineered to support part of the house structure. And as the pool is built up against the house, it had to be underpinned for extra support during the excavation and construction stages.

The colour scheme is based on a clean palette — light tan sandstone for the paving and a dark Quartzon Galaxy pool surface — creating a pleasing balance with the exterior tones of the home.

The stepping stones along the house side of the pool add an extra-chic touch while also being practical. They can be used to cross the water from one paved area to the other. Swimmers can also sit on them, making them an asset when entertaining.

When designing the pool (measuring 8m x 4m, with a 3.5sqm balance tank), Lazaway Pools and Spas put as much care into the practical matters as it did into aesthetic considerations. The pool and spa have solar heating on separate pumps, which turn on automatically when the sun comes out. The spa also has a gas heater.

As for cleaning, a filtration system and a salt chlorinator have been installed while the negative-edge balance tank consistently keeps leaves and dust off the surface of the water in both the pool and spa.

The modern architectural style of the home required a pool to match. It needed to be contemporary yet formal and convey an air of understated simplicity. The resulting design perfectly complements the home while adding something new and exciting.
