A new patio will boost the value of your property and increase your entertaining space
When Chris and Christine Davies decided it was time to boost their living space and add a much-needed entertaining area for friends and family, they were daunted at the prospect of hiring a builder and undertaking a major — and expensive — home extension.
Their vision involved a sizeable new addition and when they consulted traditional builders they found their extension quotes quickly ran over budget without capturing the seamless indoor-outdoor ambience they’d hoped for.
Rather than close off the back of the house to the garden, they wanted to open it up to make the most of their superb Perth climate. Since the Davies’ were also undertaking other renovations, they were conscious that their new extended living area should add value, but remain affordable.
The Davies’ decided to head in a new direction, contracting Patio Living to create a solution to integrate an innovative living space flowing from the house to the garden.
Keeping in mind the existing house design, Patio Living constructed the new zone above garden level but incorporated a stainless-steel balustrade to maintain Chris and Christine’s uninterrupted garden and pool views. Decking was sourced to match the timber floors throughout the Davies’ home and the look was mirrored in the structure’s ceiling, which was lined with stunning pre-sealed timber and insulated to help keep the area warm in winter and cool in the summertime.
The roof’s design incorporated in-built energy-efficient LED lighting and flush-fitted heating to maintain a streamlined look, while drop-down blinds seal off the entire area when the weather blows in — and provide an insect-free zone during summer. Insulated side walls are a thoughtful addition, which enclose the space without losing light and ventilation thanks to strategically placed windows, and the area beneath the deck offers welcome storage space for a growing family.
One of the final touches was the addition of an area where Chris can show off his culinary skills. A built-in pizza oven, fridge, vast storage cupboards and ample stone work surfaces all combine to provide the ideal location to serve up fabulous food and wine to the Davies’ many grateful guests.
A simple, clean design with plenty of space and elegant finishing touches means the Davies’ family can relax and enjoy their new year-found alfresco living area comfortable in the knowledge they’ve not only improved their lifestyle, but have added enormous value to their home — without enormous expense.
