Situated in the leafy suburb of Lane Cove on Sydney’s North Shore, this stunning apartment kitchen was recently transformed by Dezign Kitchens to enhance the look and feel of this space by inviting the outdoors in.
The previous space was a typical 2000s Australian apartment kitchen with cream laminate doors, a grey diamond-tiled splashback and a shiny, black engineered-stone benchtop with glittery silver flecks throughout. The kitchen felt dated and tired. It was also separated from the living space by a mid-height wall, initially created to imitate the idea of a bar area. The wall, however, served only to make the space feel enclosed and small. There was also minimal overhead storage, meaning the kitchen always felt cluttered as there was nowhere for the owners to store their belongings.
It therefore comes as no surprise that one of the main design considerations was to open the kitchen space to enhance the flow between the kitchen and living areas. By removing the wall between the areas, the kitchen now flows seamlessly into the living space, making it feel much larger and enabling homeowners to entertain easily without their guests feeling separated. The addition of breakfast-bar seating makes it possible for guests to relax and watch the action while the owners utilise the kitchen preparing food and drinks.
Ensuring all potential storage space was maximised, with no space wasted, was extremely important to the design. Using clever storage solutions, such as inner drawers and a stunning Tandem Anthracite pantry by Kesseböhmer from Häfele to organise all pantry essentials, means keeping the kitchen neat and tidy is now incredibly simple and efficient.
The apartment itself looks out onto a rock face with tropical green foliage that evokes an earthy green vibe. The muted, earthy colour palette of subtle greens and charcoals used within the new kitchen mimics the fresh, natural feel of the location, creating a calm oasis-like space within the busy apartment block surrounds.
The use of a mirror splashback also helps to make the space feel a lot larger. In addition, the existing kitchen footprint was extended to incorporate a pantry, integrated fridge, and a hidden laundry, making the updated space much more practical.
As the clients have a young child, hard-wearing materials that are resistant to fingerprints and scratches were super important. By using a hard-wearing material such as AbsoluteMatte by Laminex, the anxiety caused by having to be careful of the cabinetry or conscious of constantly cleaning it is eradicated. The owners can simply enjoy their kitchen instead of worrying about its longevity, making it a worthwhile renovation that has added decades of use for the future homeowners.
