Balancing Functionality, Privacy, and Serene Coastal Elegance
JMJ Interiors has elevated a city-coastal Darwin apartment with a primary suite renovation that balances functionality, privacy, and serene coastal elegance. The clients, a busy professional couple, wanted to resolve a dysfunctional layout while creating a space that reflected the calm and beauty of the Timor Sea.
The original ensuite felt exposed and high maintenance, lacking storage and connection to the bedroom. To maximise both space and privacy, JMJ Interiors reconfigured the interior architecture. The rear wall was shifted to extend the walk-in wardrobe to 7.5m, a gain of 3m, allowing a seamless run of two-pack Polytec V-groove cabinetry in Blossom White softened with a Soft Walnut feature panel.
Sculptured handles from the Momo Brave collection punctuate the joinery, adding subtle but striking detail. In the ensuite, solid walls replaced frameless glass, leaving only a glazed door to maintain light flow. The toilet was discreetly tucked away, while carefully considered lighting – including sensor-activated night lights – enhances ambience and reduces sleep disruption.
Materiality was restrained yet refined. Large-format travertine tiles provide softness and scale, setting the tone for a calm, coastal-inspired aesthetic. Artisanal Robert Gordon basins and wall lights introduce tactile depth, while brushed-nickel tapware from the ABI Interiors Namika range complements the scheme with clean curves and contemporary subtlety.
Connectivity between the bedroom and ensuite remains, but a narrower pocket door now replaces the original 1500mm slider to the living zone, improving acoustic privacy and contributing to the suite’s tranquil atmosphere. Every element is carefully considered, from storage to lighting and finishes, ensuring the space feels both practical and luxurious.
The Esplanade ensuite demonstrates how thoughtful reconfiguration, high-quality materials, and subtle design interventions can transform a city apartment suite into a retreat-like environment. With an emphasis on calm, coastal elegance, the renovation elevates everyday routines while remaining attuned to the client’s lifestyle needs.
