From Tired 1980s Apartment to Warm, Modern Entertainer’s Haven

JMJ Interiors has transformed a tired 1980s city apartment into a warm and modern entertainer’s haven with the La Grande renovation. The project addressed the client’s need for a functional, stylish upgrade without overcapitalising, turning a disjointed layout with limited storage into a cohesive and inviting home.

Central to the redesign was the kitchen, now reconfigured to maximise both form and function. By absorbing two redundant storerooms, the layout was completely flipped, making room for a generous laundry–butler’s pantry and a kitchen where the island commands attention. Serving as the heart of the home, the island provides space for casual dining, conversation, and effortless hosting, while the surrounding cabinetry and storage solutions enhance practicality.

Material choices elevate the kitchen’s aesthetic, with Polytec Natural Oak Woodmatt and Oak Steccawood half-round profiles defining column and island base details. Cabinets feature Polytec Silk in Woodmatt, creating a timeless, contemporary palette.

Benchtops combine Caesarstone Cosmopolitan White with a softly veined Corian Carrara Crema island, offering subtle contrast and a harmonious interplay of texture and tone. Warm antique bronze tapware from Caroma completes the scheme, adding understated luxury throughout the space.

The careful attention to materiality and layout reflects JMJ Interiors’ extensive experience in extracting functionality without compromising character. Clever planning ensures compact city apartments can feel expansive, with spaces designed to accommodate both daily life and entertaining. The island becomes more than a workspace, acting as a gathering point that connects living areas while maintaining a clean, elegant aesthetic.

La Grande showcases how thoughtful finishes, intelligent storage solutions, and a clear design vision can transform even a modest apartment into a stylish and highly functional home. The project demonstrates that an abundance of smart design can elevate urban living, creating spaces that are as practical as they are visually appealing.
