With its proximity to the ocean, the clients of this home wanted their new kitchen make-over to connect with their coastal lifestyle and relaxed indoor outdoor entertaining.
Family gatherings were a major consideration of the new design; the kitchen needed to allow several people to occupy the space simultaneously while remaining open to the surrounding spaces.
The original kitchen was small and pokey, had a lack of functional storage with minimal bench space and was separated from the adjoining dining and living area. This created a disconnect during gatherings with family members isolated in the kitchen while preparing meals.
Opening the wall that was separating the kitchen from the dining and living areas was crucial for the success of the new design. Specifying materials such as Staron Ocean View with its subtle coral effect for use on the main benchtop and feature splashback allowed the team at TK Design to achieve the classic coastal vibe the clients were after. Working with Staron made it easy to span the entire area of the cooktop and sink run as one piece, reducing any additional joins. The Staron integrated sink was also a must, providing a seamless transition from benchtop to cleaning zone with no unsightly nooks and crannies making cleaning a breeze!
A curved island provides a space for family to congregate during weekend gatherings and connects with the adjoining dining and living rooms. Timber shelves with LED strip lighting highlight the stunning Staron splashback and benchtop which provide a durable, warm, and fuss-free working surface. They also allow the homeowners a space to showcase their assortment of collectable items. Specifying an induction cooktop with downdraft extractor made it possible to eliminate the need for a traditional rangehood or overhead cupboards and let the shelves above feel spacious and open.
A cluster of three Tom Dixon ‘Melt’ pendants over the island add a sense of warmth to the space and provide a contrasting organic shape.
