Back To Nature

Dreary, dated and ill-suited to the way modern families live, the old kitchen in this East Geelong home was in dire need of a complete update.

A more contemporary look was needed, as was better space utilisation and increased storage to ensure the young family had a warm and inviting, supremely practical kitchen that would see them through the coming years.

The existing bathrooms were equally overdue for a makeover and while the owners didn’t want to precisely replicate the look of the kitchen, it was important that the palette of colours and materials employed created a sense of cohesion and connection.

When the owners approached Naylor Builders, they had already drawn up their design and selected their finishes. This was to include timber textures for cabinetry and splashes of green tile to conjure a fresh, back-to-nature vibe.

The kitchen cabinets are a mix of VJ-style white panelling and timber finishes. The tall cabinets to the left of the splashback and the island cabinetry feature a rich walnut-like woodgrain. The white-panelled wall to the right conceals abundant storage and boasts a circular recessed handle design.

The large central island features a Caesarstone Alpine Mist countertop, its cool-grey background patterned with delicate white veins and darker flecks of grey. This works beautifully with the timber panelling underneath. Ushering in even more storage space, each end of the island incorporates built-in open shelving.

A light-stone countertop runs along the back wall, paired with a green textured tile splashback that adds earthy character and depth – an effect enhanced by the view of treetops through the windows.

In the bathrooms, timber vanities reference the woodgrain that brings so much warmth to the renovated kitchen. Green-hued feature tiles, paired with stone-look wall and floor tiles, enrich the spaces and conjure a serene, natural aura.
