Renovating a Coastal-Front Home while Maintaining the Original Charm

A revamped coastal-front home with an aim to maintain the original charm but add a more refreshed feel.

This stunning coastal-front home was originally designed by renowned architect Glenn Murcutt. While the family loved the design, the kitchen was starting to feel a little dated. The aim was to maintain that original charm but add a more refreshed feel. The main considerations were updating the older appliances and creating a sleeker look with the cabinetry in particular, given all the joinery had visible handles. The colour scheme worked with the homeowners’ tastes, but overall, the space needed a refresh rather than a total overhaul.

To achieve this, the original floor plan was maintained and the iconic curvature of the kitchen island was highlighted with the vertical panelling. Sandy beige tones in the timber complement the beautiful views from the kitchen and the white and grey dappled benchtops by Austaron add a classic freshness.

The cabinetry was the biggest transformation, with Blum hinges and drawers adding a sleeker look without the obvious original handles. All the appliances were cleverly hidden or stored away to allow the texture and sculptural elements in the design to be the standout features. The kitchen now has a lighter, airier and more modern feel that’s fitting with the rest of the home, all while maintaining the key features the architect had originally envisioned for it.
