This kitchen, located on Sydney’s beautiful Northern Beaches, became somewhat of a patchwork quilt over time. It had seen many evolutions and additions across its life, each serving a purpose at the time. But after years of constant change, the kitchen no longer felt cohesive and it was time to completely renovate.
The challenge with this renovation was that it needed to fit within the rest of the home’s aesthetic. Additionally, the homeowners wanted to reshape it around the way they like to live and entertain.
The first choice to be made concerned the island at the heart of the kitchen. The homeowners said it plays a role in their everyday living and is a gathering point for guests. Premier Kitchens decided to retain it, but add a bit more character with a curved island that’s finished in Calacatta Borghini honed marble.

This remarkable stone continues through to the splashback, creating a sense of continuity and bringing a strong natural element into the space. Adding a touch of luxury, an integrated LED strip adds a subtle layer of illumination, highlighting the material and enhancing the atmosphere as the kitchen transitions from day to evening.
But the wow factor with material doesn’t stop there. The palette is complemented by floating shelves made of warm timber, introducing a relaxed element against the central stone. Hepburn Henley handles in acid-wash brass add another layer of considered detail, balancing the contemporary cabinetry with a sense of warmth and craftsmanship.
Functionality wasn’t lost with the material choices. Having used a downdraft cooktop at another property, the clients wanted to incorporate the same solution here, allowing the cooktop to sit neatly within the island without the need for an overhead rangehood. An integrated refrigerator further contributes to the streamlined appearance, allowing appliances to disappear into the joinery.

Design response
Objective
Renovate the kitchen while keeping the same footprint, but with an updated aesthetic that blends in with the rest of the home.
Solution
A curved stone benchtop that continues to the splashback helps add flavour to a kitchen that already served its function, but now with a greater sense of cohesion.
