Perfecting a Transitional Style

This large 1990s home had a kitchen very typical of the era: heavy blackwood arched-profile doors and dark-brown granite benchtops set against a backdrop of beige walls and timber door/window frames. A more cohesive and updated style for the kitchen and laundry, and a bar area added to the formal dining room, were all part of the client brief.

The homeowners wanted a layout that maximised the space, had excellent flow and was traditional yet contemporary in style. A coffee bar, walk-in pantry, space for a large fridge and freezer, as well as island dining for five were all on the must-have list.

Taking on the challenge with gusto, the team at Nouvelle Designer Kitchens & Bathrooms transformed the space with a stunningly beautiful and elegant kitchen design that will easily stand the test of time. Functionality, style and aesthetics all meet harmoniously in a light-filled space reminiscent of a more traditional style, but quietly modern in its functionality.

Gone is the heavy timber, replaced with soft white joinery and a rich marble-look Talostone Calacatta Oro benchtop and splashback. Neutral Walnut brown timber floors sit alongside the fresh white walls and Shaker-profile cabinetry.

A standout element in the room is the multi-armed chandelier pendant that sits over the island seating zone; its contemporary, minimalist silhouette stamps a modern vibe on the new kitchen.

The traditional profile joinery and mill-worked rangehood combine with the more contemporary cabinetry hardware and gold-finish tap to expertly convey the transitional look sought by the homeowners.

A walk-in pantry was created with the removal of the door into the old storeroom, using up valuable space under the stairs and creating the perfect spot for a coffee station – another must-have item ticked off.

The bar in the formal dining room utilises the same material palette as the kitchen, creating design cohesion between the two spaces. A fully integrated fridge provides easy access to beverages, while mullion-glass wall cabinets house elegant glassware that makes for a lovely traditional style statement.

The laundry room was overhauled to house additional storage, two washing machines and a dryer. Attractive marble-look tiles in a herringbone pattern give the room style and a touch of luxury that is a reflection of the new kitchen and formal dining room, ticking all the boxes for these satisfied homeowners.
