Brunsiwck House by Placement Studio

The brief – Sited on a narrow block, this addition seeks to reimagine the typical Victorian terrace typology.

Design outcomes – A reorientation around courtyards and framed views of garden blurs the line of internal and external, while funnelling natural light into a defunct south-facing plan that situated the ancillary wet areas at the rear — a typical planning move of the era.

In efforts to maintain existing footprint and back garden, additional amenity was configured under an expansive skillion roof, providing increased area on a tightly restricted site without overcapitalising on coverage.

Small Renovation Brunswick House

In resistance to contemporary open plan, living and dining are separated by the central wet area and mezzanine, which divides the spaces into more intimate gestures — creating separation within a seemingly open volume. The use of in-built joinery as a tool to craft space is evident and paired with the selection of robust materials, creates a timeless backdrop for everyday life.
