Glorious glazing and a mighty fine ceiling define this stunning home in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

Like a pub without beer or a kitchen without a sink, a home without windows and doors is no home at all! Fundamental to the design and construction — not to mention the liveability — of a home, the effectiveness of high-performance windows and doors cannot be overstated.

Rylock Windows & Doors

Providing a barrier from the elements outside, as well as allowing for a visual connection between the interior and exterior parts of your home, the right windows and doors can boost your energy efficiency while reducing your power bills and environmental footprint. In addition to their functional prowess, they should also sympathise with the style of your home. Rylock Windows & Doors can do all that and then some.

Over the past decade, oversized glazing has taken hold of the collective consciousness and become one of the biggest architectural trends in Australia and abroad. As such, the performance of these products has never been more important. In warmer climates, quality glazing shields the interior of the home from radiant heat to deliver ultimate living comfort. For cooler climates, Rylock’s Low-E Toughened Double Glazing with Argon Fill provides greater insulation to reduce the amount of heat loss and provide better temperature regulation.

When selecting double-glazed, energy-efficient windows and doors for your next build or renovation, remember that performance, functionality and placement are paramount to effective product selection. In terms of performance, Rylock products achieve exceptional results in AS 2047 windows and external glazed doors compliance testing. Looking at functionality, Rylock offers a range of operating mechanisms (such as hinged or sliding) depending on your architectural style, while for placement, Rylock consultants can help you consider your site’s climatic conditions and solar orientation to achieve the optimal solution for airflow, light and insulation.

Oh, what a ceiling!

Oh, what a ceiling!

In the leafy eastern suburbs of Melbourne, visitors are often heard exclaiming, “Oh, what a ceiling!” when they enter the extension of this suburban oasis, which has reawakened the tired, original mid-century brick veneer home.

The skilled architects from Green Sheep Collective re-configured the home to accommodate bedrooms and hobby spaces, while the extension features large, open-plan living areas for entertaining.

Windows to each of the bedrooms have been replaced with Rylock Commercial Series double-hung products, which, on a counterbalanced mechanism, allow cool air to be drawn in through the bottom and hot air to be expelled through the top. For privacy, the walk-in robe, ensuite and bathroom feature satin translucent glass for diffused light.

Oh, what a ceiling!

Double-hung windows (defined by a narrow profile) were specified by Green Sheep Collective to ensure the surrounding interior and exterior spaces could be fully utilised. This consideration was also applied to the rear extension, where large Rylock Commercial Series sliding and stacker doors face a northerly orientation, drawing an abundance of natural light into the home.

The incredible ceiling in the extension extends from inside to out, reflecting the desire of the clients to create a strong connection between the two spaces. The “angling” and inverting of a traditional beam structure has given additional purpose and beauty, effectively creating a warm, unique and inviting space.

The primary product that connects the home with the garden is a custom-made, six-panel, 6m-wide Rylock Commercial Series stacker door which features a flat sill that can be rebated for ease of transition into the garden for entertaining, yielding a great sense of connection to the outdoors.
