Extensive renovations paved the way for this backyard’s makeover into a formal outdoor entertaining area

When the owners of this large Bayview estate in Sydney decided to extensively renovate, they chose A Total Concept Landscape to re-design all of the external spaces into a formal style, reflecting the quality finishes chosen for the rest of the home.

“There were three very distinct external areas that we were able develop: a period-style entry and circular driveway, a tennis court in the lower area of the property, and an elevated pool and adjacent entertaining area,” says John Storch, principal designer of A Total Concept.

The main external entertaining area consists of a stunning elevated infinity pool, with views toward Lion Island and Pittwater. “Obtaining approval to construct the swimming pool was controversial due to the sloping site and substantially elevated position selected for the pool,” explains John.

The traditional appearance and style of the poolside pergolas belie the modern electronically-controlled waterproof covers and radiant heaters concealed within the pergolas. Blond sandstone paving together with the deep-blue ceramic tiles of the pool and traditional water feature sculpture ensures the overall project is in keeping with the stately home.

At night, the poolside entertaining areas are well lit with LED downlighting which, together with energy-efficient LED lighting in the swimming pool, creates a striking lighting effect of washes of light and shadows dancing around the pool area.
