With the temperature set to rise after months of rugging up, it’s now time to start thinking about whipping yourself into shape and getting the long-neglected pool freshened up to help turn your backyard into your very own summer oasis.
But while a pool refresh has traditionally conjured up images of a blue liner supplemented with a line of blue tiles, Australians are increasingly swapping out that look with fun, on-trend designs that make a splash with friends and family.
According to Beaumont Tiles design specialist Rachel Gilding, two years of lockdowns seeded the emergence of a range of trends that can transform any pool into a stylish entertainment statement that celebrates Aussies’ love of the outdoors. “We’re seeing some inspiring world-travelled style trends starting to emerge in projects across the nation that should be considered for a pool makeover,” she said. “And they are trends that will stand the test of time.” Rachel pointed to two pool trends in particular: Wanderlust and Mediterranean.
Travel the world at home
Wanderlust leans towards true adventure and global travel traits, and it is not just for the free-spirited; it captures a sense of adventure. “Think an incredible hierarchy of elements spanning handwoven cloth textures, romantic bold patterns, rich colour palettes of deep blues, crimson and bronze, contrasted with pops of sparkle and warm ambient lights,” says Rachel.
“Wanderlust is all about the indoors meeting the outdoors in a rich expression of exotic far-away lands and nomadic traveller ideals. For example, you could have Travertine Warm Ash paving transitioning into glass mosaics, such as Mosaic Emerald Mos Glass Gloss, within the pool and around its curves. Such a look creates an invitation to ‘stop by’. Accompany the style with woven chairs and raw cotton towels, oversized green leafy plants in breakout spaces, and weathered poolside lanterns to create added layers of interest to your newly renovated space.”
Mesmerised by the Mediterranean
Mediterranean style pays homage to a spectrum of earthen colours, with hints of blue hues to reflect the ocean and sky, all in celebration of an endless summer.
“Though these pools are not your mother’s terracotta moment, the new wave of Mediterranean styling has made conscious decisions to include layers of interest to create timeless spaces,” says Rachel. “Think beige or cream stone designs, handmade textures and Moroccan-inspired patterns. Homes styled in this theme are placed perfectly to frame your pool with a seamless connection. Combine mosaic tiles, such as Niebla Sky Blue, to highlight the natural tones of water, with Pompeii Crema from Beaumont’s exclusive Microtec range. Due to Microtec’s unique manufacturing properties, these tiles can be taken from poolside through to the front porch.”
Ready. Set. Reno?
Rachel says no matter what you opt for when freshening up a pool, there are three important things to consider.
“First, be 100 per cent certain of your selections. Sometimes you can fall in love with a tile or style but are unsure how it will look once installed,” she points out. “To help, see our What’s My Style quiz to help identify your style and BeVizual Live, which, in three simple steps, lets you see what your selection would look like installed. Once you’ve landed on the look, select the tile to be used around a pool with a slip resistance of at least P4-P5. And for tiles and mosaics being used inside the pool, ensure they have technical properties that are not affected by salt water or chlorine.”
