The designer and builder, Sustainable Homes Melbourne, collaborated closely with the clients to create a tailored solution using eco-friendly, high-quality materials.
With a focus on solar passive design principles and advanced systems, the renovation has turned a once cold, leaky two-bedroom, one-bathroom home into a spacious four-bedroom, two-bathroom residence.
The exterior showcases a captivating mix of materials, including Zinc Cladding, recycled bricks, and Western Red Cedar Shingles. A distinctive turret on the east elevation features a staircase leading to the first floor, highlighted by a slender 2.4-meter-high fixed-lite window.
For optimal thermal performance, several products from Rylock’s Thermally Broken Series were integrated, including fixed-lite and awning windows, as well as hinged doors throughout the home. On the first floor, Commercial Series Casement Windows and Architectural Aluminium Sliding Windows enhance cross-flow ventilation, while external shrouds protect against solar heat gain.
Thanks to Sustainable Homes Melbourne’s commitment to energy efficiency, the NatHERS rating improved from 3.1 to 6.1 stars, significantly enhancing the home’s comfort. Blower door tests showed a remarkable reduction in air changes per hour, from 27.7 ACH pre-renovation to just 7.7 ACH, all while retaining 90% of the existing building fabric.
Achieving such impressive results required a whole-of-house approach, with Rylock’s high-performance product solutions playing a crucial role. Their windows and doors feature multiple quality seals and excel in NATA-accredited laboratory tests for Australian Standards, achieving outstanding results.
Sustainable Homes Melbourne was recognised as a finalist in the 2024 HIA GreenSmart Energy Efficiency Awards for Golden Turret, reflecting their innovative design, focus on energy efficiency, and commitment to creating comfortable, environmentally responsible living spaces.
