Contemporary lifestyle demands with a touch of tradition

It would be foolhardy to shun the conveniences offered by our technological age for the sake of old-world authenticity, as a creative kitchen design can deliver the benefits of both. There is no better example of how this can be done than this delightful Kitchens Victoria project, which has blended the warmth and charm of yesteryear with modern functionality.

The homeowners were enchanted by provincial styling and, after a decade of living with a small and impractical kitchen, they yearned for one that made daily chores easy. Armed with this brief, Kitchens Victoria designer Terry Steegstra conceived a room that boasted a decorative mantel, ornate corbels and a ceramic butler’s sink as well as soft-close drawers, pull-out spice and oil racks and a waste disposal system. Overhead glass cabinet doors and a chandelier enhance the classic aesthetic, while granite stone benchtops and top-of-the-line appliances make meal preparation a breeze.

The new open-plan design has placed the kitchen at the hub of the home with the island bench — large enough to comfortably seat four — at its heart. Plenty of workspace has been allocated and the corner pantry provides ample storage.

Kitchens Victoria has drawn from the finest aspects of two eras to produce a room that matches the past with the present and the result is a family kitchen perfect for today.
