Calm Confidence

Set within a contemporary extension to an original Art Deco home, this Caulfield kitchen is a study in calm confidence.

It’s inviting from the get-go, revealing its layers slowly through expressive stone, gentle colour and beautifully resolved details. Designed for real life, it’s a kitchen shaped by how its owners cook, collect, gather and move through the day, dogs very much included.

Before the renovation, the kitchen was rich in character but short on cohesion. A standalone oven and cooktop were paired with reclaimed furniture storage and an IKEA-based island, all anchored by a striking slab of Calcite Barlume stone personally sourced by the owners. While the stone was a clear hero, the layout lacked flow, zoning and proportion, with most storage tucked awkwardly under the stairs.

The homeowners approached the talented team at Select Kitchens with a clear brief. They requested a kitchen built around two much-loved centrepieces: the Calcite Barlume stone and a Wolf E-Series/Sub-Zero oven with its signature blue interior. They also needed the room’s storage, function and durability to be dramatically improved. As a former chef, Roger needed serious performance and efficient workflows; Georgia wanted space to proudly display her heirloom and travel-collected teacups. And with two large energetic rescue dogs in the mix, robustness was non-negotiable.

The solution is a kitchen that feels both expressive and restrained. The swirling lavender, blue and green tones of the stone flow seamlessly from island to main run, extending vertically into a dramatic backlit splashback. Fully dimmable lighting with adjustable colour temperature allows the space to shift effortlessly from task-focused mornings to ambient evenings.

Deep indigo cabinetry echoes the Wolf oven, balanced by soft cream overheads against a blush-painted brick wall. Curved detailing throughout references the home’s Art Deco roots while improving circulation and safety. Clever storage solutions, from pull-out benchtops to hidden ladder housing, ensure every millimetre works hard.

This kitchen has been designed for living. It’s layered, personal and deeply connected to the people (and dogs) who call it home.
