Tradition and skills become true artistry
VS started out with the goal of honouring and preserving the tradition and history of the Lloyd Loom weaving technique. To do this, they partnered up with local people in Cirebon, Indonesia who are well-known for their weaving and bending skills. Located near where VS plans on building its production plant, it made sense to choose this area as its main focus. The craftsmen here have centuries of experience which elevates VS products to pieces of art – each one handmade with meticulous care. The designs are made in Belgium and that is exactly where they are finished as well, the way they imagined them at first.
Painters, seamstresses, and designers all work together. To complete the circle. With a lot of care and an eye for detail. Lloyd Loom weave is made from twisted Kraft paper on the one hand, and Kraft paper spun around a steel wire on the other hand. With just the twisted paper as the warp and the steel and paper combination as the weft, Lloyd Loom is produced on rolls in just the same way as textiles. The Loom sheets are submerged in a bath of glue to ensure firmness and are then cut to the proper size. Subsequently, their highly skilled craftsmen shape and staple the loom sheets to the rattan or wooden furniture frames by hand, thus producing a smooth and attractive finish that will, unlike normal wicker, will not snag clothing or skin.
SUSTAINABILITY
From the beginning, VS has made a clear choice to work with natural resources as much as possible for the production of our furniture with an ecological mindset. Very conscious about the consumption of resources. Recycling, the cleaning of wastewater and the use of ecological cleansing products are standard procedures at Vincent Sheppard.
Their headquarters in Belgium is self-sustainable with solar energy to provide electricity for their production process. In 2013, they received the FSC®-label from the Forest Stewardship Council: a symbol of environmental, social and economic sustainability.
