An Award-Nominated West End Transformation for Modern Living and Lasting Accessibility

Garnering six award nominations for one incredible project, this West End project by Virginia Bishop Interiors has transformed an outdated early-2000s abode into a refined and functional dwelling designed for modern living and future accessibility.

Entertainer’s kitchen with a future focus

The original kitchen, with its high-gloss cabinetry in mushroom purple, awkward under-bench oven and chipped terrazzo surfaces, has been replaced with a carefully considered scheme that balances sophistication with practicality.

Central to the redesign is a large island bench, now providing seating for four and acting as both a social hub and a highly functional workspace. The joinery in Polytec Havana Oak Woodmatt pairs beautifully with engineered light-oak floorboards, creating a subtle contrast that aligns with aged care design principles. Engineered YDL Angel Falls stone was craned in via the balcony in a single slab, resulting in an elegant, seamless surface that is both durable and easy to maintain.

Clever integration defines this kitchen. A walk-in pantry with wide pocket doors conceals a plumbed-in fridge, houses heavy appliances at bench height, and is illuminated with LED lighting for ease of use. The design also introduces a NEFF oven installed at waist height, a NEFF warming drawer, and a drawer dishwasher to limit bending. For further convenience, a motorised Blum ServoDrive concealed bin opens with the touch of a knee.

Accessibility has been carefully woven into the design, with removable fronts under the cooktop and sink allowing for potential wheelchair clearance. The space adopts a pivot concept layout, reducing unnecessary movement, while the inclusion of upholstered bar stools ensures comfort for entertaining or casual meals. A feature wine fridge is positioned prominently and accessibly, a nod to the client’s love of entertaining.

The result is a kitchen that feels fresh, contemporary and welcoming, while also being future-proofed for the client’s evolving needs. Practicality and elegance meet seamlessly, ensuring this is a space the client can enjoy with ease and confidence for many years to come.
