A bespoke lifestyle landscape created for an exceptional canal-side home

Landscape of the Year Awards Entrant VIC

It’s the dream scenario. An opulent waterfront home with a luxuriant, view-capturing landscape that offers the ultimate in resort outdoor living.

Designed and built by Supreme Green Landscaping, under the stewardship of director ,Paul Leesment, the landscape is the perfect accompaniment to the three-level house in Patterson Lakes, a sought-after outer-Melbourne suburb developed around a network of man-made waterways.

“The family wanted to prioritise lifestyle and easy indoor-outdoor living. They sought outdoor spaces with wow factor but the goal was to complement, rather than compete with, the modern, high-end architectural build by Latitude 37,” explains Paul.

Rounded forms in the landscape create a sense of flow, referencing the curves of the canals and seeming to beckon the family outside. These curves also help to soften the strong lines of the architecture.

A broad sweep of floating steps stretches almost the full width of the covered outdoor entertaining pavilion and leads down to the lawn and water’s edge. To the side of the pavilion, a second, smaller set of steps leads to the generous resort-style swimming pool, built by Neptune Pools.

The pavilion paving, steps and pool surrounds are of high-strength concrete, which creates a clean, contemporary look that complements the architecture. The concrete pool surrounds morph into a sunken, circular fire pit zone, at the centre of which sits a Galio Star steel gas fire pit in a black finish that picks up on the black details in the home’s facade.

The floor of this zone is of slip-resistant Millboard composite decking in a warm Gold Oak colour. This textured decking, also used elsewhere, including the front garden, for design cohesion, recreates the nuances of natural wood.

The planting is a blending of native and coastal species, selected to thrive in the waterfront location and enhance the resort vibe. The inclusion of palms in both the canal-side and front gardens balances the scale of the home and adds a statement tropical flourish. Supreme Green Landscaping was also entrusted with planting out the balcony and rooftop gardens, as well as installing automated irrigation to all garden areas.

Lighting plays an integral role in both the front garden and water-facing garden, and was planned in partnership with Gardens at Night. This ranges from the inset lighting in the pavilion step risers that illuminate the way after nightfall to the strategically placed uplighting to the palm trees.

The effortless elegance of the finished landscape belies the challenges faced in its creation, all of which were skilfully resolved. From the enticing fire pit to the full outdoor kitchen in the pavilion and the pool with its spacious surrounds designed for lounging about, the family has everything they need to relax and entertain at home.
