“When these clients decided on a 1950s retro kitchen, it suited us perfectly as a bespoke joinery company with projects outside the square. I was given freedom and flexibility, having only to ensure the kitchen suited entertaining and had lots of free-flowing space. It’s a 1920s stone character home with traditional styling, so a vintage kitchen works, although it’s bright and bold with personality and high impact. In order to deliver a daring new kitchen, not simply update what was already there, we removed a wall. With a long, narrow shape, it was important to balance both sides of the room. The pantry is linked by a bench seat containing storage and balanced by the oven tower with concealed microwave. The kitchen extends into an open-plan dining room, and a concrete pillar with Tasmanian oak creates visual separation between the spaces. Curves, aluminium trimming and the colour scheme are typical of retro styling while the curves also enhance the flow. The use of white for accents and framing and the aluminium detail contrast with the blue [featured throughout the kitchen], making the colour really pop! It’s a trip down memory lane but with all the convenience of modern accessories and hardware.”
