Taste of the Tropics: an exotic backyard project

Regardless of the season, there’s a definite holiday vibe in the air in this exotic backyard project

For a family that loves to entertain and enjoy the outdoors, this modern outdoor room with a tropical flavour is the ideal retreat. “The homeowners wanted an area that the family could enjoy throughout the year,” says Nathan Boutros, managing director of Iconic Design & Landscaping. Designed and constructed by Iconic Design & Landscaping on a flat, grassed area, the space offers an abundance of spectacular inclusions such as the rectangular pool, hanging fireplace, pizza oven, bar fridge, barbecue/outdoor kitchen and speakers placed throughout the garden. The centrepiece, however, is the pool’s water feature with flames that glow from behind. Frameless glass fencing ensures the view can be appreciated from any angle.

”There was one aspect we had to get around when designing the project,” says Nathan when discussing the job’s challenges. “When walking out through the back sliding door, the homeowners didn’t want to see a big post for the pavilion, so we built a cantilevered roof so it flows through the yard. To complement the roof, we then built the table as a cantilever.”

Nathan and his team have incorporated a variety of carefully selected plants in the backyard, all serving different purposes. Tiger grass features around the pool, while ghost bamboo was planted behind the pavilion — Nathan’s favourite part of the designed space. Lush catalpa trees along the pool divide the pool from the grassed area and pavilion, and snow maiden grows along the balcony. For the finishing touch, black granite paving adds a dark, moody ambience.

Relaxation with the family is at the heart of this Eastern Suburbs project, brought to perfect fruition by Iconic Design & Landscaping.
